„I’d like to say that Charles Daniel is the first of my American students to pass the fifth dan test the first time he took it. Of course, you, Doron, also passed it first time around. But in the old days, you had to pass it the first time you did it: it was a matter of survival then, because a real sword was used! If you didn’t get it the first time in those days, it was clear that you didn’t amount to much. But by the time you do your fifth dan test, the teacher knows pretty well if you’re going to succeed.

And anyone who makes a practice of staking a great deal on a single endeavor generally knows beforehand whether he is going to make a success of it or not. It’s true that there are times when you can’t tell. But you’ve just got to „go for it,” whatever you think. That’s what we call in ninjutsu „shiki wo shinobu”. With no thought for either winning or losing, you just go all out, regardless. It’s utterly simple, but extremely difficult.

Just as my teacher used to tell us, this kind of transcendence is really vital. In the fifth dan test, it is said that you go into a state of mu, nothingness, and this state is intrinsically a transcendental one. And I want you all to experience and appreciate this state, this sense of transcending.”
